GEBRUEDER TEICHMANN

As a part of ‘Magnetic Fields Presents Fieldlines’: an immersive residency project held in the week prior to Magnetic Fields Festival at Alsisar Mahal; Hannes Teichmann and Andi Teichmann (Gebrüder Teichmann), Bidisha Das (sound artist), Ustad Hakeem Khan (Kamaicha), Firoz Khan (Kartal), Sumitra Devi (vocals and harmonium), Ulrich Teichmann (multi-instrumentalist) and Kutla Khan (Dholak), lived and worked alongside each other conceptualising a sonic space that explored realms of traditional folklore and electronic music. The project was made possible with a Goethe-Institut International Coproduction Fund grant and realised in collaboration with Gebrüder Teichmann and their label NOLAND.

How did Karachi Files take shape?

Karachi Files is the culmination of a two week ‘Sound Camp’ organised, with backing from the Goethe-Institute, by Berlin-based brothers, Hannes and Andi Teichmann (also known as DJ and production duo Gebrueder Teichmann) and the bosses of Karachi based label Forever South, Rudoh (Bilal Nasir Khan)  and Dynoman (Haamid Rahim). It brought together a select group of producers and live musicians from the city, with others from Germany, France, Switzerland and the Maldives, for a two-week jam session in a rented house.

KARACHI: Genres of music do not need categorisation as long as their listeners enjoy it.

This was exactly what happened on Wednesday evening when 11 electronic musicians from Germany, Pakistan and the Maldives performed at a concert called Karachi Files in the Arts Council’s open-air theatre.

The concert was aimed at bringing together the musicians so that a cultural fusion could be accomplished. And the objective was achieved to a great extent.

[Selina Nowak]: Mit welchen Erwartungen seid ihr nach Kenia geflogen?

[Andi Teichmann]: Es war ein grosses Experiment und zwar in musikalischer, sozialer, wie auch kultureller Hinsicht. Wir haben sehr viel Zeit auf engem Raum miteinander verbracht und es war nicht von Anfang an klar, wo es hingeht. Es war auch nicht wirklich zwingend geplant, dass am Ende ein Album dabei herauskommt. Man hat sich aneinander herantasten müssen und sehen, was passiert. Das war eigentlich das Spannende, und im Rückblick denke ich, dass jede Seite um einen wahnsinnigen Erfahrungsschatz reicher geworden ist.

HigherFrequency (HRFQ) : Can you tell us what’s planned for your Japan tour?

Hannes Teichmann : We have a really cool tour, we are going to visit the whole of Japan. We start in Tokyo then we go to Sapporo, Osaka, then we go to Okinawa and come back for the finishing party in Yokohama. So it’s like the whole country from the deepest south to the highest north.

HRFQ : So in Yokohama you’ll be playing live. What’s the difference between tonight when you DJ, and when you play live?

Andi Teichmann : The first difference of course is we play our own music (laughs). We use just analogue stuff so it’s maybe more…

Hannes : …rough.

Andi : Yeah, we once decided that we didn’t want to use a laptop anymore and after that we changed our live set and also the music changed with this.

Hannes : It’s quite fun. When we play live it’s more compressed. We play one and a half hours and it’s a really compressed energy. When we DJ we like to play long sets. Three or four hours and get in the mood.

Die Produktion „M’Orpheo“ zeichnet sich unter anderem dadurch aus, dass sie zwei höchst unterschiedliche musikalische Genres zusammenbringt: Auf der einen Seite die Musik Monteverdis, die den Ursprung der Oper markiert und als Wendepunkt zwischen Renaissance und Barock gesehen werden kann, auf der anderen Seite die Techno-Kompositionen der Gebrüder Teichmann, die sich an den Ursprüngen der Techno-Musik und der elektronischen (Tanz-)Musik orientieren.

Ihr Aufnahmestudio hat etwas von einem Museum, voller Synthesizer, früher Ataris und Drum Machines. Zu Besuch bei dem DJ- und Produzentenduo Gebrüder Teichmann, das gerade sein neues Album herausgebracht hat: „They Made Us Do It“

Musik ist eine „zeitbasierte Kunst“, wie es in einer analytisch treffenden, doch vom Klang her eher hässlichen Wendung heißt. Ohne Zeit ist Musik ein Tonträger, den niemand anhört, zugeklappte Noten oder einfach nichts. Was genau mit der Zeit in der Musik geschieht, ist eine andere Frage, vom subjektiven Zeitempfinden ganz abgesehen. Sie verläuft jedenfalls nicht immer gerade in einer Richtung, auch nicht bei metronomisch strengen Veranstaltungen wie Bach-Präludien oder Minimal Music.

Sie tut es schon gar nicht bei der Perkussionistin Robyn Schulkowsky und den Berliner Produzenten Andi und Hannes Teichmann, genannt Gebrüder Teichmann. Ihr gemeinsames Album nimmt den Mund im Titel einigermaßen voll: „Time Bends“ heißt es. Hier wird, so der Anspruch, die Zeit gebogen und in allerlei Formen gebracht, in denen sie üblicherweise nicht ab Werk geliefert wird.

Als Livemusiker und DJs reisen Andi und Hannes Teichmann schon eine ganze Dekade um den Erdball, doch innerhalb der letzten drei Jahre ist im musikalischen Leben der beiden nochmal viel Neues passiert: Als Kuratoren des Kontinente übergreifenden Projektes „BLNRB“ haben sie mit Künstlern aus Nairobi und Berlin das Album „Welcome to the Madhouse“ aufgenommen.

A masterpiece of avant-garde silent cinema Berlin – Die Sinfonie der Großstadt by Walter Ruttmann is one of the most extraordinary representations of the modern metropolis. The screening will be enhanced by live sound by Gebrüder Teichmann an iconic DJ and producer duo from the Berlin electronic scene.

Their performance combines fragments of electronic music, urban subcultures and contemporary experimentation, creating a unique experience of sonic and visual reappropriation of the city. Made in the 1920s, Berlin – Die Sinfonie der Großstadt is a cinematic journey that captures the essence of Berlin during its period of maximum expansion and transformation.
