PODCAST EX.482 Gudrun Gut

…. But as we hear in this conversation with RA‘s Andrew Ryce recorded live at MUTEK festival, this sort of attitude has come naturally to Gut for decades. Despite the changes she’s witnessed, authenticity runs through everything she does.

PODCAST

Gudrun Gut has been an activist in the underground music world since the late 1970s, and with a music career that spans 4 decades, she is a force to be reckoned with. Her expansive discography is comprised of some of the most engaging and influential work to come out of electronic music, and her latest solo album, Moment, was released in December of 2018 on her Monika Enterprise label. A prolific artist, she’s dabbled in everything from post-punk to techno, was cofounder of the legendary band Malaria! with Bettina Köster, was an original member of Einstürzende Neubauten, and has directed 2 seminal record labels, Monika Enterprise and Moabit Musik. Throughout her career, she’s been a staunch advocate for a gender equality and has fought for feminist ideals to great effect. Please join us for an intimate conversation with Gudrun Gut, where we touch on everything from her history in self-directed artistic motivation to the political importance of reigning in music industry gatekeepers to finding a production process that works in the moment, among other intriguing topics. The interview was conducted in Berlin in May of 2019. Thanks for listening!

Gudrun Gut is one of the most respected figures in the German electronic music scene. Active in the Berlin avant-garde community since the late-’70s, she has left an impressive mark on music history. With her most recent album ‘Moment’, she proved that she is far from being done. Reason enough to catch up with her for this episode of Telekom Electronic Beats TV.

In her 2018 Red Bull Music Academy Berlin lecture, Gut reflected on musical life in the city before and after the fall of the Wall, why she prefers collectives over bands and how she feels more free now than ever.

Gudrun Gut on a life at the centre of Berlin subculture …. The musician, DJ and founder of Monika Enterprise reflects on a career defined by revolution and rule-breaking. Gudrun Gut moved to West Berlin in 1975 and was immediately smitten. It was, as she describes it, the alluring smell of “coal and kebabs”. There was also the multicultural liveliness, an antidote to the orderliness of her life in Lower Saxony with its schlager and denialism, all driven by the Wirtschaftswunder. ….

Westberliner Frauenbands: Der Durst nach Neuem

Sie sorgten für Zoff und machten der Subkultur Ehre: Die Westberliner Frauenbands Mania D, Malaria! und Matador. Höchste Zeit für eine Werkschau.

Gudrun Gut is an artist that had and still has many lives: from being part of legendary bands like Einstürzende Neubauten, Mania D and Malaria! to her solo acts, always with an eye open on experimentation and always curious and ready to push herself further. We talked about her evolution as an artist, the beauty of collaborations, feminism in music, keeping it up and very sad stories about suicidal pet fishes.

This soundtrack is comprised of newly created music during filming, original tracks, new mixes, and later edited material of Gudrun Gut’s miniseries for rbb TV.

It’s always refreshing to share news about Gudrun Gut. The iconic German producer has too many accolades worth mentioning: from funding Malaria! in the beginning of the 80’s rise of new wave to being an early member of Einstürzende Neubauten, running the Monika Enterprise label and also constantly collaborating with other artists through her vast trajectory, to name a few. In an attempt to give a brief glimpse at all of this, she’s the co-director of GUT, a mini documentary about herself made for German TV; it consists of three episodes taking place at her country estate in the Uckermark region, not far from Berlin.

Was ebenso für Gudrun Guts neue Stücke gilt.

Platz 44: Gudrun Gut
