Biography
Chra is the alias of the Viennese producer, author and radio/TV presenter Christina Nemec, who has been active as a musician in both the metal/noise and experimental electronic scenes since the 1980s, and as a a radio producer at Radio Orange since the late 1990s. In 1992 she released a cassette album with Bray on Trost Records. Together with Gini Müller, Katrina Daschner and others, Nemec founded the queer-feminist performance band SV Damenkraft.
Christina Nemec runs the queer-feminist label comfortzone together with Konstantin Drobil (of Trost Records), on which she released Kumbia Queers, Cherry Sunkist, Mika Vainio, Mathias Schaffhäuser and a picture disc by Lydia Lunch and Philippe Petit.
After a period of experimentation with low frequencies and sound effects, Chra started working with sine waves, processed with tape recorders and other analogue and digital tools to allude to landscapes, territories, silences and exceptional and extreme situations.
Since 2012 she has played electric guitar in the noise and drone band Shampoo Boy, together with Christian Schachinger and Peter Rehberg, who died in 2021.
She released several solo albums on Peter Rehberg’s renowned label Editions Mego, most recently “Seasons” in summer 2020, and her name can also be found on various compilations and as a remixer.
In 2019, Chra was awarded the “Prize of the City of Vienna for Music”, which has been established since 1947.
