Long-lived Texas label Elevator Bath encompasses musique concrète, electroacoustic sound-art, noise and drone… at least. Label boss Colin Andrew Sheffield has kindly shared the debut solo album from Berlin-based Mexican artist Daniela Huerta, which comes out in late October. Huerta is one half of Huerta Ensamble with Concepción Huerta (I think no relation!) and DJs as Baby Vulture at venues like Berghain and CTM. Soplo bears some aural indicators of contemporary experimental electronic, but draws as much from musique concrète and electroacoustic music. The album opens with the dripping and flowing water of “Seqvana”, which is combined with muted, pinging synth tones and clanging sounds. There’s always a clear sense of space. Water sounds percolate through the whole album, joined with blurred voice, trembling organs, reverberating choirs and more. So when we reach “Fondo”, the album’s seventh track, it’s a surprise to hear an almost march-like two-note bassline underscoring lurching synth horns (and bubbling water). Halfway through the bassline disappears and the synth tones are engulfed in increasingly resonating pink noise. Soplo is an artful album of sonic illusions, concrète music as it was always intended.

Also known as Baby Vulture, Mexican born, Berlin based multimedia artist and DJ Daniela Huerta uses mythology as a springboard to explore the origins of consciousness, archetypes, rituals and collective memory. As well as collaborating with Natalia Escobar in the interdisciplinary duo Koaxula, she has worked with artists including Ale Hop, Lucrecia Dalt and Concepción Huerta, and has composed music for Iván Argote’s films.

Wo wir gerade die Kankyō Ongaku gestreift haben: Die mexikanische, in Berlin lebende Klangkünstlerin Daniela Huerta (eventuell bekannter vom Electro-Duo Cornerbred mit Magda) schickt sich an, auf ihrer ersten großen Soloarbeit Soplo (Elevator Bath, 25. Oktober) eine ganz andere zeitgenössische Art der Environmental Music zu erfinden. Eine, die von Umwelt, Geräuschen und Feldaufnahmen ausgeht. Und diese erkennbar in den Mittelpunkt stellt, dann allerdings mittels digitaler Bearbeitung und synthetischer Begleitung massiv verschiebt. Naturklänge bleiben natürlich als solche wiedererkennbar (Wasser, Wind, Vogelzwitschern, das Klopfen auf Metall) und sind es doch nicht mehr vollständig. Die Field Recordings dienen nicht nur dazu, synthetischen Ambientflächen Textur und Atmosphäre zu verleihen. Sie sind ebenso wenig nur filmisch montierte Sound-Collagen. So entsteht etwas Größeres, das über die Elemente seiner Genese hinausgeht. Vielleicht keine ganz neue, noch nie gehörte Art von (Dark-)Ambient, aber definitiv eine, die interessanter und inspirierter klingt als der Rest.

Zrealizowane w Rzymie, Paryżu i Madrycie dzieło miało swą premierę w 2022 roku w paryskim Centrum Pompidou. Potem artystka uzupełniła dźwiękiem kolejny film kolegi – „Le Fond De La Seine”. Podsumowaniem tych doświadczeń z sound artem jest jej debiutancki album. …

Jak przystało na awangardową artystkę, Daniela Huerta uzupełnia swą muzyczną opowieść o filozoficzny kontekst, sięgający latynoskiej mitologii, archetypów i kolektywnej pamięci. Nic dziwnego – „SOPLO” ukazuje się w winylowej i cyfrowej wersji nakładem amerykańskiej wytwórni Elevator Bath, która od 1998 roku wydaje regularnie w limitowanych nakładach płyty artystów z eksperymentalnej sceny w rodzaju Merzbowa czy Francisco Lopeza. Choć debiut Meksykanki to skromny zestaw, odsłania on oryginalną wyobraźnię dźwiękową swej autorki.”

Soplo may be Daniela Huerta‘s first album proper, but over the past few years she has produced a steady string of distinctive releases: singles and EPs, music for installations and dancers, AV collaborations and improvisations.  Perhaps the most memorable: a 40-minute mix of female musicians inspired by female French painters of 1730-1830.  While this was billed under her own name, Huerta is popularly known as the DJ Baby Vulture.

Soplo (Spanish for “breath”) also has a unique origin.  The music was born as the score for a pair of short, “politically charged” films from Iván Argote, and have been reworked for this release to form a new, unified whole.  When subtracted from the context of images, the musique concrète stands on its own, hallucinatory and impressionistic.  The album begins with the most modest of field recordings – the splashing of water, a forest of birds – but will soon run far afield.  Light notes enter as the water continues to flow; we are entering a different river, a river of sound.

Słuchając płyty Soplo mam wrażenie, że są to jakby elektro akustyczne miniatury, które składają się w jedną konstrukcję, utkaną na różne preparowane instrumenty czy odgłosy otoczenia. Jest to miraż wielu dźwięków pełnych niedopowiedzeń, tajemnicy, wielobarwnych poszukiwań. Jej muzyczną kolorystykę stanowi nieco rozmyta atmosfera pełną iluzji i zapomnienia. Płyta zaczyna się odgłosami wody i przez pewien czas dźwięki te do nas wracają. Pomimo różnych rytmów Sopla to album właściwie płynący. To głębokie zatopienie się w rozmyte odmęty złudzeń. Odczytuje to, że Daniela Huerta, sama próbuje wprowadzać nas w swój nieco nierealny wymiar. Tworząc dość minimalistyczne struktury dźwiękowe artystka, jakby skłaniała nas do zanurzenia w nie naszych zmysłów.

Soplo to obrazy bazujące na niejasnych teksturach, drganiach złapanych z otoczenia. czy dźwiękowych pejzażach. Daniela Huerta wspaniale przetwarza je i uwalnia w hipnotyzujący sposób. Weź głęboki oddech (po hiszpańsku “soplo”) i nasłuchuj tej emocjonującej, halucynogennej musique concrète.

Water flowing. Gentle pounding, beats, soft winds, loud startling cacophony. Feelings of mystery, darkness, and foreboding, and then soothing and suddenly menacing female voicings. Funereal, liquid sounds, draining water. A woman is talking to you but you can’t quite hear what she’s saying. This debut LP by Mexican-born, London-educated, and Berlin-based Daniela Huerta, is a hypnotic musical hallucination. Huerta loves mythology, archetypes, ritualistic forms, and collective memory, and draws inspiration from them for her soundscapes. Soplo, which is Spanish for “breath,” began as soundtrack music to two short films by Colombian filmmaker Iván Argote, but it has moved into waters of the deep-unconscious mind in the reworked music of this album. I’m quite excited by this album’s mysteries, and I think you will be too.
