Biography

In 2018, during a residency at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, Hanno Leichtmann created a six-channel sound installation for the ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests, which premiered in Berlin in December of that year with dancers from the ensemble.

In October 2021, his sound installation and audio piece SECULUM was presented at the 100th anniversary of the Donaueschinger Musiktage, the oldest and most important festival for contemporary music.

Over the years Hanno Leichtmann realized several sound installations in Berlin, like FERROCHROME at DAAD gallery and LOW NOISE CHRONICAL and ECHOCHAMBER at various galleries in the city.

In 2024 two albums reflect his current solo live performances well:

The Material for OUTERLANDS was recorded on the Villa Aurora Organ, built in 1928/29 by Artcraft Organ Company, Santa Monica, California. This cinema style organ consists of a pipe organ, a wall mounted marimba and a two octave tubular bells/chimes ensemble. All sections of the organ were MIDI equipped in 2010 and are therefore also remote controllable. Some of the recordings were processed with a ER – 301 sound computer.

CHROMACOLOR had been written and recorded by Hanno Leichtmann in Berlin and Madeira between 2020 and 2022, it draws on rhythmic minimalism as a guiding principle and might call to mind organic, instrument-based ambient music, but also incorporates jazzy moments as well as Annie Garlids multi-layered vocals that permeate through these nine pieces.

In June 2026, Ignore the Machine – s/t (Semen Contra 001) has been released. Hanno Leichtmann’s improvisation with trumpet player Nils Ostendorf which had been recorded in one take, with no overdubs.

In addition to his electronic solo and various duo live sets, Hanno Leichtmann is also available as sound artist with one of his multichannel sound installations.

Hanno Leichtmann lives and works in Berlin.
