Biography
Carme López Fernández (Galicia, 1992) is an artist, teacher and researcher in the field of Galician oral tradition music. She has a degree in Primary Education with a specialization in Music (USC), a higher degree in Interpretation in Traditional and Popular Musical Instruments from Galicia (CSMV), a Master’s in Interpretation and Musical Research (VIU) and a doctorate from the UDC with a dissertation entitled “Compilation, analysis and didactic use of the vocal repertoire accompanied by hand percussion as part of the study of Galicia’s intangible heritage in a representative case”.
Currently, Carme López is a professor in the Department of Music Education at the Faculty of Cultural Studies in Education (USC). Her research focuses mainly on the music of oral tradition and its relationship to ethnomusicology, the gender perspective and education.
As a musician, she has been part of groups such as Os Minhotos, Raiceira or the Galician Folk Orchestra Sondeseu, with whom she has also released several recordings. She has participated in various competitions for traditional music (solo bagpipe, quartet bagpipe and singing), winning several prizes.
In her solo career, Carme López has recently released Quintela (WarmWinters Ltd., 2024), experimental music with bagpipes, and Vinde todas (Microscopi, 2024) under the name Carmela, about music from oral tradition.
